The Whitechapel Gallery presents a new site-specific commission by internationally recognised artist, Claire Barclay. Barclay has created an installation in direct response to The Bloomberg Commission space; describing it as one that feels as if it has been built outside in – the walls are bare brick and the floor is concrete. This proximity to exterior spaces and the street is explored formally in Shadow Spans through the use of door and window like forms and a graphic interpretation of the brickwork that is repeated on fabric. The ideas of looking, watching, observing as a shared experience of the street are also subtly explored in the work. In addition to addressing the specific location, and as a major development in Claire Barclay’s practice, from July Shadow Spans will be animated throughout the year by a series of dance performances inspired by the work.
