Less than two weeks till 'London Histories' at the Whitechapel Gallery

On September 14 the Whitechapel Gallery in London's East End will host a special CultureLine panel discussion to explore how London’s myriad small areas acquire their distinct and fascinating characters. A panel of well-known writers, artists and historians chaired by writer and BBC London broadcaster Robert Elms will discuss the way the capital has evolved over the centuries to absorb cultures and peoples from all over the globe. Panellists include the photographer Tom Hunter, acclaimed writer Iain Sinclair and arts writer and columnist Liz Hoggard.

Tom Hunter’s highly personal work focuses on his neighbours and friends in east London, where he lives and works. In 2006 Hunter was the first artist to have a photography show at the National Gallery, London and has created work for both the Museum of London and Geffrye Museum.

‘Psychogeographer’ Iain Sinclair’s award-winning novels build on his love of London’s ‘myth and matter’, while his non-fiction work includes London Orbital and Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire. He has established a reputation as one of Britain’s most imaginative and original writers.

Liz Hoggard's explorations of the capital's cultural life are well known to millions of Londoners through her Evening Standard column. She was amongst the first to take full advantage of the new East London Line when it opened, in a one-day CultureLine challenge.
