The Museum of Methodism tells the history of Methodism from John Wesley to the present day, the origins of the worldwide Methodist movement and its contribution to shaping Britain’s political and social history. John Wesley’s House stands next to the Chapel. His home for over a decade it is one of the finest surviving small Georgian townhouses in London.

A Museum first opened on this site in 1891 in the house that John Wesley had occupied for the last twelve years of his life. In the 1980’s as part of a general refurbishment project, the crypt under the church was up-graded and the exhibitions from the house moved there into the newly created, ‘Museum of Methodism.’ John Wesley’s House was then returned, as near as possible to its original form and is open as a typical Georgian House but with some artefacts relating to Wesley and his life in the House.

So visitors to this site have the opportunity to tour the House, see the exhibits in a large one room Museum, and see the Chapel itself which has the original pulpit and lots of other items of interest. They can also visit John Wesley’s grave at the back of the Chapel and the small side (Foundery) Chapel which has original benches and the small organ from Charles Wesley’s House.

There is no café but parties can book in advance to have tea/coffee. Another interesting aspect of the site is the men’s toilets – late 19th century marble urinals and original Thomas Crapper cisterns.

There are also musical recitals every Tuesday lunchtime.
